Are you interested in the history of Dudley Castle?

Due to popular demand and for those who would like to visit and learn about Dudley Castle, we have introduced exclusive tours of the 11th Century castle situated in the heart of Dudley Zoo. During these family friendly themed evenings, you can learn all about the Medieval and Tudor times, life during the Civil War, the great fire in 1750, missile weapons & firearms, medieval food & cookery and much more…..

Tours, start at 6.30 pm, last approx. 2 hours and are suitable for both adults and children, aged 8 yrs +. Cost is £4.00 adult and £2.00 child (8-15 yrs) or £10.00 for a family ticket (valid for two adults & 2 children)

All the tours will be complemented by a programme of short lectures by former Castle Keeper, Adrian Durkin.

Pre-bookings only here or by calling 01384 215313. Group bookings available upon request. A maximum of 30 guests will be admitted on each tour. All children (aged 8 yrs +) must be accompanied by an adult.

All funds raised from these events will go towards the ongoing upkeep and restoration if the Castle.

Please note:  Due to the hilly nature of the site, special arrangements must be pre-arranged for disabled guests and people with limited mobility. The Castle tower is not accessible for those with mobility difficulties.
The Tour does not include Zoo admission and no access to any parts of the Zoo site will be permitted. You must stay with the tour guide at all times.
Please be aware that there may be other functions taking place on site, however there will not be another event taking place in the Castle grounds.

All visitors will be asked to arrive at the green security gates located at the rear of The Fellows pub car park (off The Broadway).  The tour will commence from this point once everyone has arrived.  Car parking will be available on site via The Fellows pub gates.  Please do not park your vehicle on the pub car park.  The tour will commence from this point once everyone has arrived.

Due to the distance between the entry/exit point and the Castle, all guests will be asked to leave the site at the same time, unless in the case of an emergency.

Tickets are not valid in conjunction with any other offer or promotion.  Tickets are non-refundable, non-exchangeable and have no cash value.

Did you know ?

  • There has been a castle in Dudley since 1070……and that it is mentioned in the Doomsday book in 1086?
  • On 10 July 1553, Lady Jane Grey was proclaimed Queen, following the death of Edward VI.
  • On 12 Feb 1554 Lady Jane Grey was beheaded at the Tower of London aged just 16.
  • The Castle Buttery was where they stored the big vats or butts of ale and wine. The servant in charge was the Butler.
  • On July 24, 1750 a fire, which raged for three days, swept through the Sharington Range, gutting the once-magnificent palace. Dudley Castle was allowed to settle into the role of romantic ruin.
  • In the late 1800s and early 20th Century, fetes drew crowds into the courtyard and in May 1937 the Earl of Dudley opened Dudley Zoological Society with exotic animals from across the world – and it’s still here today!
