“Hand Made Hames” & “Hand Made Bricks”, two films by I.A.Recordings.
Founded in 1982, I.A.Recordings is dedicated to recording past and present industry using high definition video and photography.
“Hand Made Hames” was recorded at Walsall Lock and Cart Gear Ltd., one of the earliest worker’s co-operative firms, this production follows Tom Evans, the last hame maker in Britain, making a pair of “show hames” in 1986. Hames are a vital part of a horse’s harness, transferring the load from the traces to the collar.
“Hand Made Bricks” was recorded at Oak Farm Brickworks, Brierley Hill in 1982, it follows the process from raw clay through to the finished bricks. Oak Farm was one of the few brickyards that still employed women hand moulders, one of whom, still working at the age of 68, had started as a girl loading railway wagons.
