Unearth your ancestors – surprises may lie in wait!

Lynne and Ryan Blake get the VIP treatment at Dudley Castle

We loved reading this story about Sheffield mum and son, Lynne and Ryan Blake, getting a VIP tour of Dudley Castle after discovering they were descendents of the 5th Baron of Dudley.

It shows that you never know what surprises may lie in wait when you start researching your ancestry.

But, as Lynne herself will tell you – it’s not a five minute job! It took 30 years of digging for Lynne, with the help of her son Ryan, to unearth their stately roots.

In fact, many people are put off researching their family tree because they think it will take hours and hours of research, and often don’t know where to start.  But we believe it’s well worth the effort!

That’s why, here in Dudley, we want to help make it easier for you to discover your past.

Experts in ancestry research are on hand at the brand new Dudley Archives and Local History Centre to help you plough through the paperwork, and both the Archives and local libraries hold workshops to help you branch out on your expedition through history.

Staff are on-hand to show you how to find what you’re looking for and can train you on using the microfiche machines and other resources at the Archives site.

All of the Dudley libraries offer free access to ancestry.co.uk and have compiled this ancestry pack to help you navigate your way around the site.

So, why not take a look at these upcoming events and make a date with your past in the not too distant future? Or call in to Dudley Archives and start your search now!
